Mark and Peter Anderson grew up in the industrial Pacific port city of Tacoma, WA. They began their construction careers as laborers and wood-frame carpenters during their high school years, and for the next decade worked for numerous construction firms in the Pacific Northwest, in Boston, and further afield in Italy, Germany and France, experiencing many construction types and scales, including heavy timber, large-scale concrete and steel; remodeling, repair and historic renovation; as well as excavation, foundations, subgrade utilities and landscape grading, planting and retaining wall infrastructure. After graduating from college and while pursuing their architecture degrees, Mark and Peter started their own construction firm, which in the next decade expanded into a design-build construction and development business with in-house architecture and construction teams in Tacoma, Gig Harbor and Seattle, WA; Honolulu, HI; Kitakyushu, Japan; and later San Francisco, CA. Extensive design and construction work in Japan initiated their industry-leading innovation in prefabrication and modular construction methods–designing, pre-fabricating, shipping and erecting many complete buildings and construction components for building sites throughout Japan, in Hawaii, Washington and California. As the firm’s work has developed, an increasing majority of projects has shifted from self-performed construction to traditional architect roles in building design, process design, prefabrication and project management services in collaboration with many other general contractors, manufacturers, developers and government agencies, throughout the United States and in many areas of the world. With a consistent focus on design excellence, the firm has long been known for its creative design teams working from studios in Seattle and San Francisco, delivering a great many projects honored with national and international design awards, publications, museum exhibitions, media broadcasts and lecture invitations. Working primarily from design studios in San Francisco, California and design and fabrication workshops in the Pacific Northwest, with a dynamic, small team of designers and craftspeople closely collaborating with Mark and Peter, Anderson Anderson Architecture today designs for diverse building types, scales and programs, locally and internationally, including homes, schools, site-planning, commercial and institutional projects; as well as product innovation projects with manufacturers; and exhibition and public event projects with artist collaborators. No project is too big, too small, or too unusual–Anderson Anderson Architecture welcomes all   inquiries: creative discussion and pre-project brainstorming may likely yield unexpected new insights and opportunities all around.
